Concerning the friendship between Mr. and Mrs. Fields and the Hawthorne family, and discussing Hawthorne's destruction of the manuscript of "The Scarlet Letter," noting that when she asked him about it he replied, "I threw [it] in the fire ... long ago [and] never thought anybody would care for it." Also mentioning that Hawthorne gave her the manuscript of his "The Seven Gables."
